NATO Today: Selected Case Studies includes seven chapters that provide background information on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), with an emphasis on contemporary issues and a deeper dive into the structure. Chapter 1 dives into the pre-NATO world, the member countries (and the year they joined), and the authorization for the Alliance through the North Atlantic Treaty (articles), with a brief analysis of each article. Chapter 2 goes into discussion about the history and formation of the NATO Headquarters, the Nuclear Planning Group, the North Atlantic Council, national delegations, and NATO activities. Chapter 3 focuses on Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, also known as Allied Command Operations (SHAPE/ACO), NATO’s most senior strategic headquarters focused on real-world operations. Chapter 4 explores Allied Command Transformation (ACT), one of two strategic commands under NATO. Chapter 5 examines Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFC HQ Brunssum) as one of NATO’s three operational-level joint force commands. Chapter 6 discusses E-3A, the main air defense force across NATO, which provides for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) to NATO countries. Finally, Chapter 7 provides highlights of what this book covered and shares recommendations that NATO might consider for its future.
