This edited book presents an integrated exploration of mangrove systems as complex ecological and social landscapes where land, rivers, oceans, and human societies intersect. Rather than treating mangroves simply as coastal forests, this volume frames them as dynamic ecosystems shaped by tidal exchange, sediment processes, salinity gradients, microbial activity, and human interaction. Through a multidisciplinary perspective, the book demonstrates how mangrove ecosystems function simultaneously as biological habitats, environmental buffers, and socio-economic resources that support fisheries, coastal protection, tourism, and community livelihoods. The chapters collectively highlight the ecological foundations that sustain mangrove resilience, including biodiversity patterns, nutrient cycling, primary productivity, and habitat connectivity across coastal landscapes. At the same time, the book examines the growing pressures confronting mangrove ecosystems worldwide, particularly pollution, habitat disturbance, and the cumulative effects of human development. Special attention is given to contaminants such as heavy metals and other chemical pollutants that accumulate in sediments and food webs, often altering ecosystem health gradually and invisibly. Another central theme of the book is the need to bridge ecological knowledge with practical conservation strategies. Mangrove protection cannot rely solely on restoration campaigns or symbolic planting initiatives; it requires an informed understanding of ecosystem processes, regional environmental conditions, and governance structures. Contributions in this volume therefore explore restoration science, traditional ecological knowledge, and integrated management approaches, including perspectives related to the water–energy–food nexus and climate resilience.
Ultimately, this book positions mangroves as critical ecosystems for environmental sustainability, seafood security, and planetary health. By connecting ecological science with social realities and policy considerations, it aims to serve students, researchers, educators, and decision makers who seek a deeper and more practical understanding of how mangrove ecosystems function, why they matter, and how their conservation can be sustained for future generations.
