Gao is a faculty at the School of Kinesiology in University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, specializing in promoting health through population-based physical activity interventions. He has published over 40 first-authored research articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has been the Principal Investigator of National Institutes of Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grants. He is currently the Fellow of American College of Sports Medicine, and the Fellow of SHAPE America.
