Professor Dr. Reiner Buchhorn is Head of the Department of Pediatrics at the Caritas Hospital Bad Mergentheim and an Associate Professor of Paediatrics (Cardiology) at the University of Würzburg, Germany. He practices general pediatrics with a special interest in pediatric cardiology, neonatology and pediatric intensive care.

He completed his training as a Pediatrician at the University of Göttingen in 1993 and as Pediatric Cardiologist 1999.

He has a special interest in pathophysiology, beginning with his doctoral thesis work about surfactant alterations in multiple trauma patients and later his investigations about the pathophysiology of heart failure in children and adults with congenital heart disease. He introduced beta blocker therapy in infants with congenital heart defects. The success of this clinical model was the inspiration of a new approach to mental disease in childhood.

He is the author of more than 60 published articles in peer reviewed international medical journals and a scientific reviewer for several renowned international journals.
