Dr. Rattan earned her bachelor’s degree as well as master’s degree in Horticulture (Vegetable Crops) from Dr. YSP UHF Nauni, Solan; she earned her doctorate degree in Agriculture (Vegetable Science) from CSKHPKV, Palampur, H.P in 2006. She is presently working as an associate professor (Olericulture) in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at DAV University, Jalandhar. She has over 16 years of research and teaching experience. Dr. Rattan has handled two externally funded projects: “Androgenesis Mediated Introgression of Fruit and Shoot Borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) Resistant Genes into Cultivated Eggplant (Solanum melongena),” funded by the Government of India’s Department of Biotechnology, under the Biotechnology Career Advancement And Re-Orientation Programme For Women Scientists; and “Alien Introgression of Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV) Resistance Genes in Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L),” funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology. She is considered a co-breeder of the development of Jammu Okra-08 variety of okra, Jammu Spinach beet-07 (C-13) variety of spinach beet, Jammu Fenugreek-07 (Kasuri Supreme) variety of fenugreek, and CR-45 variety of radish. These varieties have been released for cultivation in the Jammu region by State Variety Release Committee and Central Variety Release Committee. She has 92 publications to her credit, including 47 research papers, 14 abstracts in conference proceedings, 8 technical bulletins, 8 chapters in compendium, 12 chapters in books, 1 edited book/compendium and 2 popular articles.
