Professor, Faculty of Forestry, Center of Excellence for Mangrove, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Indonesia

Mohammad Basyuni is a Professor at the Department of Forestry, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. In 2008, he graduated from United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Kagoshima University, Japan. He then pursued a Postdoctoral Fellow position under the support of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) at the Center of Molecular Biosciences, Tropical Biosphere Research Center, University of the Ryukyus, Japan for another two and half years (2008-2010). In 2010, Professor Basyuni returned to Indonesia and continued his research in understanding the physiological, biological, ecological, and pharmacological significance of plant lipids, including isoprenoids and long-chain polyisoprenoids in mangroves. Under this APN project, he collaborated with the University of the Ryukyus and Tohoku University.

His current research focuses on understanding the establishment thresholds of mangrove pioneer species in North Sumatra, particularly the implications for restoration and climate change. He collaborates with the University of Glasgow and Aberystwyth University, the United Kingdom, analyzing the recovery and restoration progress of the macrozoobenthos community structure.

Professor Basyuni was awarded a multilateral international joint initiative, e-Asia JRP (2022-2025), and has worked on international-level projects with scientists from Japan (Prof. Tadashi Kajita, University of the Ryukyus) and the Philippines (Dr. Venus Leopardas from Mindanao State University at Naawan). Since 2023, he has been a Carbon Consultant at Imperative Global.
