Mayorkinos Papaelias, PhD (Editor)

Dr Mayorkinos Papaelias is currently a Lecturer and University Fellow in NDT and Condition Monitoring at the School of Metallurgy and Materials of the University of Birmingham. He is also an academic staff member of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education. Dr Papaelias received his Ph.D. in Metallurgy from the University of Birmingham in 2004. He worked as a Project Leader at TWI before returning to Birmingham University in 2006. Dr Papaelias has been involved as technical coordinator or scientific consultant in several industrial, TSB, FP6 and FP7 collaborative research projects. He is also the technical coordinator of the NIMO and OPTIMUS demonstration projects funded by the Directorate of Energy of the European Commission which deal with the development and demonstration of an integrated wind turbine condition monitoring system for diagnosis and prognosis. Dr Papaelias currently supervises a group of eight postgraduate students and three post-doctoral assistants. The research projects he is currently involved focus on railway, wind energy, concentrated solar thermal power, bridge condition monitoring, smart composites and ship-building. He is the author or co-author of more than sixty journal and conference papers in NDT and condition monitoring. Dr Papaelias also regularly authors articles for industrial magazines such as Railway Strategies and the Rail Technology Magazine. He is an acting referee for several high profile journals and international conferences. Dr Papaelias is a Member and Chartered Engineer of the Technical Chamber of Greece and Member of the International Society for Condition Monitoring. A significant part of his teaching activities at the University of Birmingham is related to non- destructive testing and condition monitoring technologies. Finally, Dr Papaelias is the Chairman of the Education Committee of the International Society for Condition Monitoring of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing.
