Maria João Martins is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedicine, Biochemistry Unit, from the Faculty of Medicine, and Senior Researcher at the Instituto de Inovação e Investigação em Saúde (i3S). Both institutions integrate the University of Porto (Portugal).

Her research interests lie in the broad areas of Biochemistry, Metabolism and Nutrition. In particular, her most recent research interests include the study of metabolic dysfunction amelioration by mineral water consumption.

Her scientific and pedagogical activity originated 65 publications in national and international journals, including full papers, reviews, letters to the editor and editorials [60 of them indexed (WOS, PubMed and/or SCOPUS)], and 18 chapters in national and international books (3 of them indexed). She co-edited 1 international book and performed as the lead guest editor in 2 special issues of 2 international indexed journals. She (co-)supervised several PhD, MSc, BSc and undergraduate students.
