Professor Mária Frankovičová is the first Professor of Surgery in the history of Slovak medicine. She was the head of the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice, as well as the head of VÚSCH, a.s. (East Slovak Institute of Cardiovascular Disease). At the Faculty of Medicine, she teaches both Slovak and foreign medicine students, and trains future vascular surgeons – specialists.
Prof. MUDr. Mária Frankovičová, PhD. worked at respected departments abroad and has significantly contributed to the development of surgery, vascular surgery, microsurgery (replantation of extremities and their parts) and transplant surgery in Slovakia. Along with a team of co-workers, she was participating on certain priority operations in Slovakia. She was in the role of a regional expert on Vascular Surgery within the Košice region and during 2007-2009 held the position as the Chief Expert on Vascular Surgery at the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic. She is a member of the European Society for Vascular Surgery as well as the International Society of Surgery (ISS/SIC), where she represented Slovakia as a national delegate of the Slovak Surgical Society for 14 years. She was responsible for the accreditation of the study program Vascular Surgery at the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic. She has had plenty of lectures and publications in Slovakia as well as abroad.
Her scientific research activities are directly reflected in her clinical practice in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. She collaborates with different departments abroad. The Prize of the Mayor of Košice city was awarded to her in 2004 and in 2011, and she was announced the laureate of a prestigious award, namely the Crystal Wing Award, for the development in the field of medicine in Slovakia. In 2011, she was also appreciated by the Slovak Society of Angiology, and in 2013, the Municipal Executive Board of Košice awarded her with the Košice City Award for exceptional merits in the field of Vascular Surgery in Slovakia and abroad as well as for her special contribution to the development of surgical school.
