Manuel F. Varela is Professor of Biology at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico. Dr. Varela has a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences with an emphasis in molecular biology and biochemistry from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Dr. Varela was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School and studied lactose permease under Thomas H. Wilson. Dr. Varela and his wife, Ann, have two children, Timothy and Edward. Manuel and Ann live in Portales, New Mexico.
