Manuel F. Varela is professor of biology at Eastern New Mexico University. Varela has a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences with an emphasis in molecular biology and biochemistry from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Varela was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School and studied the lactose permease under Thomas H. Wilson. His research interests include studies of bacterial multidrug efflux pumps. He cloned a mannitol utilization operon from Vibrio cholerae. Varela’s lab sequenced the genome of a non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae isolated from Puget Sound. Varela and his wife Ann have two children, Timothy and Edward. Manuel and Ann live in Portales, New Mexico.
