João José Simões Sousa began his academic career in 1987, earning a master’s in pharmacy from the University of Coimbra. In 1984, he became involved in the incipient regulatory field. After completing his PhD in 1996, he collaborated with INFARMED (Portuguese Regulatory Agency) and, since then, has been involved in various regulatory areas, particularly as Quality Expert for submitted dossiers (Centralized Procedures, Mutual Recognition, Decentralised and National procedures, Variations and Renewals). Based on his educational background, he proposed and successfully integrated a “Regulatory Affairs” subject to the academic curriculum of the Pharmacy Master’s Program at the University of Coimbra. His research career mainly focuses on sustained release dosage forms and transdermal devices. He is currently a professor of pharmaceutical technology at the University of Coimbra and member of Directive Board of UCNext.
