Jan A.M. Langermans, PhD (Editor)

Professor, Animal Science Department, Biomedical Primate Research Centre, the Netherlands.

Prof. Langermans studied Biology at Utrecht University, followed by a PhD in Infectious Diseases at Leiden University, the Netherlands. In 1992, he became Assistant Professor at the Department of Infectious Diseases at Leiden University Medical Center and changed to the Biomedical Primate Research Centre (BPRC) in 1996 to work on non-human primate models for tropical diseases, such as malaria, schistosomiasis, and TB. From 2003 to 2008 he was Director of the experimental animal facilities of the Animal Sciences Group of Wageningen UR in Lelystad, the Netherlands. In 2008 he moved back to the BPRC to become Chairman of the Animal Science Department and Deputy Director of the institute. In 2018, he was also appointed special professor Welfare of Laboratory Animals at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University. Prof. Langermans is (co)-author of >90 scientific papers. His research is mainly in the field of animal welfare and the application of 3R principles in combination with NHP and other large animal models, for (severe) human diseases. He is involved in a number of EU projects, a member of various advisory boards, and a member of several animal ethics committees.
