Born of Italian descent and raised in Europe, Dr. Francesco Chiappelli entered UCLA following his Maturità Scientifica high school degree. He obtained his bachelor’s degree (1975) in three years and began working in the Mental Retardation Research Center as a Lab Helper, a Lab Assistant, and then eventually a Senior Staff Research Associate. He later obtained a master’s degree in research methodology and statistics, and eventually his Ph.D. (1986). Upon completing a dual post-doctoral fellowship (Fundamental & Clinical Immunology, and Psychoneuroimmunology), he accepted a tenure-track position at the UCLA School of Dentistry, which he served for over two decades on the faculty and as vice-Chair. He also taught in the Department of Health Sciences, California State University, Northridge for the last 4 years of his active academic career. During his academic career, he administered sizable research budgets, mentored several students to their graduate degrees, and published over 200 peer reviewed research and review papers in his field, as well as several book chapters and academic books in his field of scientific expertise (i.e., immunology and psychoneuroendocrine-immune interactions, and evidence-based healthcare). He received several honors, among which the principal ones for his contribution to the science of evidence-based healthcare are: Honorary Clinical Doctorate Degree, International Fellow of the British Society of Medicine, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Honorary Membership in the Medical Academy “Filippo Pacini” of Pistoia. Since his retirement, Professor Chiappelli has immersed himself in the gargantuan issue of climate change and global warming (Leadership Corps, Climate Reality Project; 5Gyre Ambassador for finding scientific solutions to the current global health crisis), and their effect on immunity (i.e., new aggressive virus variants across latitudes, pathogens released from melting ice). He also enjoys writing creative nonfiction, walking his dog, and caring for his herb garden.
