Elfriede Stangler-Zuschrott obtained an MD at the University of Vienna in 1962 and worked at the university's 1st Eye Clinic until 1996, heading the Orthoptics and Neuro-Ophthalmology Department from 1967. In 1978, she became the first woman in Austria to secure a lectureship in ophthalmology followed by a professorship in 1985. She retired from her private practice at the end of 2014.
