Carl A. Caspers became a below-knee (transtibial) amputee in 1959, and a Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist in 1974 after training at Northwestern University Medical School. He invented the adherent urethane liner, vacuum suspension and flexible, dual socket prosthesis. In recognition for all his ground breaking improvements in the socket interface, he has received numerous awards, including the 1999 Thranhardt Keynote Lecture Award and the Titus-Ferguson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
