Benjamin T. Lynerd teaches political theory at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He is the author of Republican Theology: The Civil Religion of American Evangelicals (Oxford, 2014) and of Frederick Douglass, Republican (Oxford, forthcoming in 2026), along with numerous articles on African American political thought. He serves on the Community Advisory Board for WHRO, the largest public media operation in Virginia.
