Angel Catalá was born in Rodeo, San Juan, Argentina. He studied chemistry at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry (biological branch) in 1965. From 1964 to 1974, he worked as an Assistant in Biochemistry at the School of Medicine of the same University. From 1974 to 1976, he was a Fellow of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Storrs, CT, USA. From 1985 to 2004, he served as a Full Professor of biochemistry at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Catalá is a Member of the National Research Council, Argentina, and the Argentine Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His laboratory has been interested in many years in the lipid peroxidation of biological membranes from various tissues and different species. Professor Catalá has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and several chapters in books and edited four books. Catalá received awards at the 40th International Conference Biochemistry of Lipids in 1999 (Dijon, France). He is the winner of the following awards: Pan-American Nutrition, Food Science, and Technology Award, in 2006 and 2012, South America; Human Nutrition, Professional Category, 2006 Award in pharmacology. Catalá belongs to the editorial board of Journal of Lipids, Biochemistry Research International, Oxidative Medicine, and Cellular Longevity, International Review of Biophysical Chemistry, Frontiers in Membrane Physiology, and Biophysics, World Journal of Experimental Medicine, and World Journal of Biological Chemistry. Co-Editor of the Open Biology Journal.
