Alexander M. Ponizovsky, MD, PhD is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of psychiatry. His areas of expertise include schizophrenia; suicidal behavior; addiction; hospital and community-based mental health and rehabilitation services; evaluation for different treatment programs with regard to quality of life and psychosocial outcomes assessment; psychological distress and psychosocial resources, maintenance treatment; migration and mental health, and attachment research in psychopathology. Dr. Ponizovsky earned his MD degree at the Moscow Medical Academy and his PhD at the Moscow Psychiatric Research Institute and Bekhterev's Psycho-neurological Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia. After immigration to Israel in 1991, he was awarded the KAMEA fellowship established by the Israeli Ministry Immigrant Absorption for distinguished immigrant scientists.

Currently, Dr. Ponizovsky is the KAMEA Professor of Psychiatry and Advisor on Mental Health Research in the Department of Mental Health Services at the Israeli Ministry of Health. Dr. Ponizovsky has more than 150 scientific publications, including 10 chapters in international collections. He has lectured at many research meetings and conferences. He is a member of the editorial board and reviewer for more than 60 medical journals. Dr. Ponizovsky is the recipient of several grants from the Israeli Ministry of Science, Zionist Forum of Soviet Jews and for his research on Epidemiology of Suicide ideation in an Immigrant Population. He is also the recipient of international awards, including the International Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to Medicine and Healthcare. Dr. Ponizovsky is listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
