Alexander Grinshpoon, MD, MHA, PhD, is Director of Sha’ar Menashe Mental Health Center, Hadera, Israel and Clinical Associate Professor at the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. He served as Director of Mental Health Services in the Israel Ministry of Health from 2001 to 2006. He former positions include Director of Tirat Carmel Mental Health Center, and Head of the Department of Psychiatry in the Israel Defense Forces, and Director of the Reservists Section of the Central Mental Health Clinic for the Israel Defense Forces.

The structural reform of Mental Health Services in Israel was implemented during Dr. Grinshpoon's administration of the Mental Health Services in the Ministry of Health. The number of inpatient beds was reduced by more than fifty percent. The Law for Rehabilitation of the Mentally Handicapped in the Community was initiated and the community based services for individuals with mental disorders significantly increased by over one thousand percent. During that period, the Ministry of Health participated in a multi-national study "From Epidemiology to Mental Health Action", the results of which are included in this book.

Professor Grinshpoon earned his MD degree at Kishinev State University, Faculty of Medicine, USSR, and his Master’s in Health Administration and PhD in Medical Management at Ben-Gurion University, Beersheba, Israel. He is currently the President of the Northern Branch of the Israel Psychiatric Association, and Head of the Law Committee of the Israel Psychiatric Association. Prof. Grinshpoon has received research grants from the Ministry of Health Social Affairs, Ministry of Finance, as well as from the Israel Anti-Drug Committee, and pharmaceutical companies. He has presented the results of his research at scientific conferences in Israel and abroad.

Professor Grinshpoon has published over one hundred articles in international scientific journals, and serves as reviewer for leading journals in the field of psychiatry. He is currently the head of the only fellowship program in forensic psychiatry in Israel. The book, Forensic Psychiatry in Israel (Hebrew), co-authored by Professor Grinshpoon is a nationally acclaimed textbook in all academic libraries in Israel.
