In this compilation, the authors abstract software from hardware by introducing a domain-specific virtual machine that provides an efficient implementation of computations related to radio signal processing in a variety of platforms.

Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of solutions for the management of smart city sensing applications are explored, considering architectures, optimization models, and algorithms for service deployment.

In closing, recently proposed virtual machine placement approaches are reviewed and analyzed for the reduction of carbon emissions in different types of clouds.
