ABSTRACT

The use of AI tools like ChatGPT has changed the academic practices of both students and faculty in computing fields in significant ways because of the rapid adoption of AI tools. These tools have proved to increase the learning efficiency, academic self-efficacy and confidence. Nonetheless, their growing popularity also creates a burning issue of the maintenance of academic integrity as one of the critical foundations of the educational process. The paper discusses the implications of extensive use of AI tools in the computing colleges, and specifically, how to reconcile their use with the principles of academic honesty. The first step is to categorize the typical assessment methods used in the field of computing education and discuss how each of them can be affected by the AI-assisted tools. On this basis, we suggest a series of general principles that cut across different assessment forms that would guide instructors in the responsible implementation of AI tools in their pedagogy. Additionally, we deliver assessment-based, targeted suggestions that are aimed at maintaining the purposes of education as well as the reduction of academic misconduct risks. These recommendations can be viewed as a useful resource that instructors can use to strike the balance between the pedagogical benefits of AI tools on one side and the need to preserve the academic integrity of computing education on the other. Lastly, we present a formal model, which will offer a systematic mathematical approach to assessments of students with the help of AI-assisted technology.
