ABSTRACT

Tinnitus is a perception that is perceived by individuals in ears or head which can be buzzing, ringing, hissing and other noises. There are several methods of treatment offered to patients with tinnitus such as medications, surgeries, hearing aids, tinnitus maskers and psychological treatment. Severe tinnitus can lead to emotional and psychological problems in tinnitus patients. The involvement of psychiatrists and psychologists in the management of tinnitus is therefore necessary. This survey aimed to determine status of tinnitus management by mental health professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists and medical officers working in the psychiatry department in Malaysia. Validated questionnaires were distributed to eligible respondents by hand, mail and email. Of 14 respondents, only 43% of them stated that they have seen patients with complaint of tinnitus. The treatment used by them were pharmacological approach, counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). No significant association was found between the work experience and the number of tinnitus patients seen by the professionals (r = 0.25, p = 0397). Generally, the tinnitus management by psychiatrists, psychologists and medical officers in Malaysia was inadequate. The likely reasons for this are discussed accordingly.
