The Philosophy of Film: A Critical Analysis of Classical Film Theories, Overcoming the Epistemic Impasse of the Formalist/Realist Dichotomy from the Ontological Perspective of Eastern Thinkers aims to provide an analytical-critical investigation of classic theories of film, with an emphasis on the theories of Munsterberg, Eisenstein, Arnheim, Balázs, Bazin and Kracauer. Firstly, the evolution of ‘formalist’ and realist theories of film encompass the main focus of this book, aiming to try and shed light on the way the theories emerged, and to identify the foundations and philosophical presuppositions of the theories. Secondly, the book provides a critical view on the previous articles and scholarly works regarding the philosophy of film, most of which have been written prescriptively. Therefore, the present book enables the reader to inspect and analyze previous theories while reading about them.
