The first official national park was Yellowstone National Park in the USA, created in 1872, although similar places had been protected by governments much earlier. At the time of publication, more than 6500 national parks exist across the world; the number will no doubt continue to grow. Every national park is unique, but typically national parks embody scenic splendor; outstanding recreational opportunities; conservation of biological resources, often in the form of habitat for charismatic megafauna; and conservation of important historical or cultural resources. In the last several decades, there has been an increased focus on the role national parks play in the functioning of ecosystems. This volume looks back at the first 53 years of national parks, and it looks forward to the role and management of national parks in the future. Individual chapters consider the importance of thinking about larger ecosystems; wildlife management; tourism; economic benefits; funding; and historical, cultural, and environmental interpretation. Although most chapters are about individual parks or countries, their insights are applicable more widely.
