ABSTRACT

The irrigation water alone shares 70% of the world’s water use. Water, Food and Energy are essential for human prosperity, economic and environmental sustainability. Irrigation system networks require both water and energy. The introduction of water lifting pumps in the mid twentieth century changed the paradigm of irrigation system using pressurized pipe network. Solar energy is one of the best solutions to resolve fossil fuel’s environmental impact and considered as economical energy. The governments have invested a significant amount of budget in solar irrigation as a subsidy, however only a few innovative researches have delivered reviews of the impact evaluation. There lacks still a comprehensive review of solar irrigation impacting on socioeconomic condition. The study aims to assess impacts on society and the economy ensuring validity and the justification of the investment. The study process searched the database related to socioeconomic impact of solar powered irrigation research papers published until April 2022 focusing on the empirical studies. Women are substantially empowered to increase their access and control over their agriculture products and household decision makings. The purchasing power of the farmers are improved their spending to invest in household wellbeing. The societies have increased resilient against the social disasters along with social harmony. The use of solar powered irrigation has given a good opportunity to save huge amount of foreign currency by avoiding the import. The optimized solar irrigation has a zero CO2 emissions. The study will be beneficial to support the future planning process of solar PV system.
