ABSTRACT

This paper evaluates the strategic role of Smart Water Metering (SWM) initiative of Saudi Arabia. National Water Company (NWC) of Saudi Arabia installed over two million smart water meters in 2016 with a target of three million by the end of 2025. This initiative reduced 820,000m³ of water use weekly across the entire system and acting as a key step towards regenerative water management nationwide. Also, this study examines success of SWM which depends on two key factors; a) long term sustained higher user adoption through ongoing engagement and awareness campaigns, b) mandatory quality water pipeline network. Then, the scaled roll out of this initiative will create a resilient, healthy natural water system. Finally, SWM initiative is a key driver for regenerative water management in Saudi Arabia to achieve water security goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
