Across the world, democratic systems are commonly founded on the principle of majority decision-making. Elections, legislative processes, and public policy formation generally reflect the will of the majority. Without effective safeguards for minorities, democratic governance may unintentionally generate exclusion, marginalization, and structural inequality. The book, Protection of Minority Rights and Majoritarianism: A Human Rights Perspective in South and Southeast Asia, examines one of the most challenging questions in modern constitutionalism and international human rights law: the protection of minorities within systems governed by majority rule. The eleven chapters within the book explore how constitutional law, international legal frameworks, and political structures influence the protection or erosion of minority rights in South and Southeast Asia.
