ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to demonstrate the predictors for having complications post total knee replacement (TKR) surgeries. Method: 242 patients with total knee replacement surgery in two medical centers in Saudi Arabi were followed for thirty-five days post-surgery. Mean age was 65.86 ± 8.67. Body mass index (BMI) mean equal 32.46 ± 5.51. From the univariate logistic regression analysis for bleeding and surgical site infection (SSI), two out of the 59 identified variables were found to be significantly associated with bleeding and SSI, using p value ≤ 0.05 to identify them. These two were length of hospital stay and day for start walking post operation. In this study there were no confirmed cases of pulmonary embolism, only there were 12/242 (5.0 %) DVT (deep vein thrombosis) cases, so, predictors for DVT were stated. From the univariate logistic regression analysis among DVT cases, six out of the 59 identified variables were found to be significantly associated with DVT symptoms, using p value ≤ 0.05 to identify them. These six were type of surgery, hypothyroidism, levothyroxine, length of surgery, duration for DVT prophylaxis and ability to tell VTE (venous thromboembolism) prophylaxis name, dose, and schedule. Regarding readmission, from the univariate logistic regression analysis for readmission, five out of the 59 identified variables were found to be significantly associated with readmission, using p value ≤ 0.05 to identify them. These five were antiplatelet administration, VTE risk factors other than the surgery, length of hospital stay, length of surgery and anesthesia type.
