Abstract

This chapter explores the significance of the Albanian migration to Greece since the 1990s and argues that there are good reasons to include it, as a case study, in the Greek school history course. Mobility is key to understanding human history, as people have always been on the move, and migration is a fundamental condition of today’s globalised world. Our case study, although of particular relevance to the recent history of the two countries, nevertheless points to a much broader – in fact universal – historical phenomenon, both in times of war and in times of peace. The chapter argues that areas of human experience that have existed in all times, such as migrations – but also disease, natural disasters and climate change, transport, communications, family life, childhood, food, housing, clothing, etc. – can be excellent starting points for teaching about cause and effect relationships, change and continuity, different perspectives, methods of processing historical sources, changing assessments of significance and importance, and ethical issues. In this context of history teaching, taking into account the perspectives of intercultural and civic education, it seems mutually important, for both Albanian and Greek society and education, to delve into the multidimensional history of the recent migration movement as a case study. Moreover, there are very interesting examples of approaching similar issues internationally, e.g., in the Berlin-Brandenburg and the Australian history curricula.
