ABSTRACT
Mental health issues regarding pediatric persons with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are discussed. Pediatric populations are particularly susceptible to comorbid psychological disorders or stress that exacerbate FGID symptoms. Chronic and recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms may benefit from a combination of medical and psychological treatment. Psychological interventions can be incorporated into medical care for pediatric FGIDs through psychopharmacological, psychotherapeutic, and combined treatments. Several behavioral and psychological interventions are reviewed: Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), Exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques, clinical hypnosis, biofeedback, mindfulness-based therapy, and Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Physicians must consider the influence of therapeutic rapport and treatment rationale on treatment outcomes.
