ABSTRACT

Professor Thomas Peter from Cedar Sinai passed away on April 12, 2024, at the age of 80 years. He was born in India.

Dr. Peter himself recalls stories from his life starting in the southern Indian town Kochi, in the state of Kerala, as he moved away from home at the age of seventeen [1]. His first destination was the ancient holy city of Banaras where the odds were against him not only getting into medical school but also graduating given all the various distractions and experiences only university hostel life can offer. Dr. Peter attended the College of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, where he received an MBBS (Medical School degree). Dr. Peter, who was resident of Cochin, went to the dense metropolis of ‘60s Bombay, where he worked at one of the country’s most illustrious hospitals and gathered stories and friendships that would endure for decades. He completed his internal medicine residency studies in medicine and cardiology at the GS Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) to receive an MD. An improbable opportunity abroad took him away from his country’s shores to a hotbed of Cardiology and novel culture in Australia. He received further training, specializing in cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, under the guidance of Dr. Graeme Sloman and simultaneously obtained an M.D. degree from the University of Melbourne [2]. Thereafter, he was at the Green Lane Hospital, in Auckland, New Zealand, working with Dr. Robin Norris for a year in the field of infarct size reduction both in the experimental and clinical settings. He received another doctorate degree in Cardiology from Bombay University in 1976.
