Perception and handling of human rights have undergone structural changes in the course of globalization since the early 1990s. Changes of the geopolitical order led to wars becoming the norm and poverty the rule, human rights violations have increased worldwide. On the other hand, new social movements have emerged, and global resistance has formed, whose actors seek to redefine what social freedom and democratization can concretely mean. Importantly, the socio-economic conditions changed, strengthening the position of the so-called threshold countries, also resulting in new global coalitions. The supposed end of history (Fukuyama) is in fact the beginning of a new historical stage. This means that the question of human rights are increasingly debated in terms of their definition and the possibilities of its implementation in people’s and peoples’ everyday lives. This fight for “dignity, equality and justice” extends far beyond the legal dimensions. The contributions in this book provide an overview of some of these developments.
