ABSTRACT

Pulmonary renal syndromes are rare, but they are life-threatening conditions. This discussion reflects on current issues of definitions, epidemiology, symptomatology, diagnostics, management, and prognosis. Prompt diagnosis and early initiation of treatment improves chances for lung and renal recovery. Current immunosuppressive regimens have improved life expectancy in this potentially lethal condition. Relapse of the disease is common in certain conditions (i.e., ANCA vasculitis), and close follow-up is necessary. The challenge for clinicians remains to achieve the balance to reduce risk that is associated with immuno-suppressive therapy against damage associated with under- treating an aggressive disease. Variations and overlapping conditions heightens the clinical challenge for clinicians.
