Many bacteria, viruses, and parasitic organisms can invade as well as inhabit a child’s gastrointestinal tract and induce significant symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Such illnesses may be deadly and require rapid recognition as well as treatment depending on the invasive species. Common causes of pediatric gastrointestinal infections are reviewed here regarding bacteria, viruses, parasites, and protozoans. This discussion concludes with COVID-19, a new form of pediatric gastrointestinal tract infection as of December 2019, and discusses the latest diagnostic methods and forms of treatment.
