This book summarizes the data obtained by the authors on the genetic, botanical, and biotechnological characteristics, as well as the breeding achievements of the annual wild species Linum grandiflorum Desf. (scarlet flax, flowering flax). Detailed comparative studies of the metaphase plates of L. grandiflorum and other wild flax species with n = 8 and n = 9 are presented. Special attention is given to the induction of genetic variability using ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), with a particular focus on the relatively rare somatic mutations observed in flax species. The process of obtaining tetraploid accessions in L. grandiflorum is explored, with a comparison of their cytological, anatomical, and morphological traits to those of diploid plants. The book also delves into the variability of flower traits, such as color and shape, as well as the inheritance patterns governing these traits. A review on molecular-genetic studies of this species is presented. The outcomes of a breeding program utilizing both induced and spontaneous mutations are presented, showcasing their potential for flower trait improvement. Additionally, the successful in vitro germination of pollen on a specially developed artificial nutrient medium is highlighted. The formation of callus in vitro is examined in comparison with other annual flax species, emphasizing the regeneration potential depending on the explant type. A comparative evaluation of the ornamental qualities of flax for landscaping purposes is also provided, along with agronomic recommendations for its cultivation.
