ABSTRACT

This discussion outlines the emergence of periarteritis nodosa (PAN) in the 19th century to the concept of the Churg-Strauss syndrome in the 20th century and now the 21st century concept of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). Also considered are concepts of diagnosis, evaluation, differential diagnosis and management for this complex disorder. Much has been learned over the past three centuries, and more mysteries await to unravel for researchers and clinicians in the 21st century with regard to its identification, etiology, links with other disorders and effective treatment.
