ABSTRACT

Primary dysmenorrhea in young females causes lower abdomen cramping pain that affects the functional activities just before or during menstruation. Physical activity has been shown to be effective in prevention of primary dysmenorrhea. This study was done to evaluate the effect of Pilate’s exercises and various yoga asanas on primary dysmenorrhea (PD) in young females. Method: In this randomized trial 36 females with primary dysmenorrhea (age 18-30 years) were included in two group i.e., Pilate’s exercises (n = 18) and yoga asana (n = 18) for three sessions per week for four weeks. They were assessed for their pain, stress, quality of life, and for symptoms of dysmenorrhea. Results: Both Pilates and yoga were significantly effective in managing primary dysmenorrhea (p < 0.005) after four weeks. Pain and quality of life were significantly improved in Pilates group (p < 0.005) whereas stress and symptoms were better managed in Pilates group but no significant changes were reported. Conclusion: Both Pilate’s exercises and yoga asana are effective in managing primary dysmenorrhea. However, overall Pilate’s group was superior to yoga group. Both these interventions are safe and inexpensive options with good acceptability among young women. Hence could be included as an intervention for treating primary dysmenorrhea.
