ABSTRACT

Joint range of motion is an important predictor of flexibility and an important component of fitness. Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different electrode assemblies of Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on shoulder range of motion (SROM) in young adults. Methods: The present study was a double-blinded randomized crossover trial carried out at the Department of Physiotherapy, GJUS&T, Hisar, India. Twenty participants were selected following the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the study. Healthy young adults, both males and females of age group 18-24 years were included in the study. The participants were allocated to three groups: Group A, B and C using lottery method. The total duration of the study was 21 days. The outcome variable for the study was range of motion of the shoulder joint. The reading for SROM was taken before and after the treatment using digital goniometer. Results: The result of the study showed significant improvement in SROM when between group comparisons were done. On post hoc comparisons the significant improvement in the ROM at shoulder joint in group A (cathode over DLPFC and anode over Cz) as compared to Group B (anode over C3-C4 and cathode ipsilateral supraorbital area) and group C (Sham tDCS). Conclusions: Application of cathodal tDCS over DLPFC and anode over CZ showed significant improvement in SROM in healthy young individuals.
