Accumulation of ectoine, one of the compatible solutes, enables bacteria to grow in hypersaline environment and ectoine is widely found within the domain of the Bacteria. In order to explore the behavior of alkaliphilic bacteria in hypersaline conditions, the effects of hypersaline treatment on accumulation of compatible solute in alkaliphilic Bacillus sp. U-21 have been investigated. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain U-21 belongs to Bacillus halodurans.
The strain U-21 has an optimum growth at pH 9.5 and can grow in NaCl concentrations up to 1.4 M and 2.0 M in a defined medium with DL-malate as the sole carbon source and complex medium, respectively. This new book concludes that the synthesis of ectoine and glutamate is an important role in the cellular adaptation reaction of the strain U-21 to hypersaline conditions. (Imprint: )
