ABSTRACT
The Municipality of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is struggling with increasing environmental pressures caused by municipal solid waste, construction waste, and Eid al-Adha related surges in organic wastes. There are four main findings of this research: (1) less than 60 percent of daily solid waste is collected and, hence, there is massive illegal dumping; (2) post-Eid animal waste causes acute odor and health risks because there is no proper disposal practice; (3) institutional action like the Clean Green City Index (CGCI) and WSSP services is limited by poor enforcement and shortage of resources; and (4) the level of consciousness of residents on the disposal of organic waste is at a critically low level, with fewer than 20 percent of residents aware of With the aid of global best practices and GIS-based modelling techniques, the paper proposes the construction of integrated waste processing facilities, the use of optimized collection routes, religious and digital means of citizen participation and policy changes to introduce accountability. These measures may aid Peshawar gain sustainable and resilient urban sanitation.
