ABSTRACT
There are interesting interactions between the lungs and the endocrine system. The pulmonary endocrine system, which includes pulmonary endocrine cells and neuro-epithelial bodies, responds to various insults such as hypoxia, inflammation, and exposure to harmful substances that can lead to endocrine dysfunction. Moreover, the lungs themselves exert a role in the hormonal homeostasis of the entire human organism, influencing hormone levels in the blood. Pulmonary endocrine dysfunction can arise from ectopic hormone production or the release of active substances from the lung. Also, systemic endocrine disorders can have significant respiratory implications, affecting lung development as well as function, sleep-related breathing, the body’s immune system and the presence of stress. It is crucial for clinicians to recognize these interactions to prevent and effectively manage the respiratory complications of endocrinopathies.
