Osteoarthritis is an inflammatory condition usually affects body joints of knee, hips, and hands. Pain and stiffness are the most common symptoms of this disease. The inflammatory mediators located in the synovial fluid of joints are activated and induces the matrix metalloproteinases and cyclooxygenase enzyme which lead to destruction of cartilage, this is the major pathology behind arthritis. Marketed analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory drugs are widely used for pain and swelling relieving purposes, but to adverse effect consequence, alternative therapy like ayurvedic, neutraceutical and yoga could be applied to prevent the occurrence of osteoarthritis. In this review article we have highlighted the important ayurvedic products and neutraceutical components, and their possible mode of action for prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis.
