ABSTRACT

Premenstrual syndrome is a common problem among the girls at their reproductive age which is mildly expressed but some severe cases are also there. The study was carried out in order to compare premenstrual syndrome symptoms (PMS) among the adolescent girls at Dhaka and Tangail city in Bangladesh. In this cross sectional study a total of 212 adolescent’s girl were selected purposively. A standard questionnaire was developed to obtain the relevant information regarding socio-economic, dietary information and four-point Likert-like scale with degrees of severity were also included in the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results showed majorities of the respondents mean age was (14 ± 1.50) where the mean starting age of menstruation was (12.75 ± 1.272). The food choices, eating habits were significantly high in Dhaka city compared to Tangail city. In this study psychological, behavioral, physical and clinical symptoms among the respondents were moderately observed. Study showed that respondents with severe symptoms were very low (p < 0.05) whereas, most of the respondents were facing mild and mainly moderate symptoms concerning psychological symptoms. It is observed both in behavioral and physical symptoms very few respondents were suffering from severe symptoms (p > 0.05) and majority of the respondents were facing the moderate symptoms (p < 0.05). It is concluded that, the problems associated with PMS affect the psychological and physical condition of women sometimes.
