ABSTRACT

There are more than 2,000 pediatric residency programs in the United States with 9,000 pediatric resident physicians (3,000 per year). There are a similar number of positions in emergency medicine. In addition, there are 700 family practice residency programs that also teach pediatrics. These programs might not have specific training for the medical evaluation of child abuse and neglect, and fewer of them have faculty that are certified in child abuse pediatrics.
