Part of the book: Tsunamis: Detection Technologies, Response Efforts and Harmful Effects
Tsunami has been among the catastrophes globally responsible for an unprecedented economic impact of USD 280 billion and 250,000 casualties over the past two decades. Despite its rare occurrence, the deadliest 2004 Indian Ocean and 2011 Tohoku tsunami events have drawn worldwide attention to this natural disaster. The failure of coastal structures during such extreme wave conditions has led to recent progress in understanding tsunami-induced loads and effects, particularly on buildings. However, the modeling of wave-structure interaction has remained a fastidious concern due to the complexity of tsunami flow characteristics involving wave breaking and overtopping. The following chapter, therefore, reviews past and recent key research on this topic, along with methods for wave generation. Discussion on bringing a “real” tsunami into the laboratory is presented.
