Book Description
The goal of Bodies and Emotions from the Global South: Empirical and Methodological Inquiries About Labor is to explore the experiences of workers from the Global South, especially from an Argentine city. Based on sociological research conducted in Argentina between 2018 and 2022, these empirical analyses are supplemented by methodological reflections derived from the specific strategies used by researchers in the field. In the context of transformation in the world of work, driven by an unprecedented digitalization of society—with spatial and temporal commodifications—workers’ daily practices are also being redefined in terms of their emotions, perceptions, and sensations. These categories are examined from a sociological perspective that connects bodies and emotions with social structuration processes in capitalist society.

Chapters in Part 1 analyze different types of workers before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. They also show a longitudinal analysis of social policies in Argentina over the last decades that affect households, especially their strategies for provision. Freelancers in digital tasks are characterized by an apparent dynamic in managing their time. Understanding sensitivities allows us to move beyond this point to explore contradictions and paradoxes.

In Part 2, the chapters provide methodological reflections on qualitative and quantitative techniques, examining the challenges and obstacles encountered in fieldwork. The opportunities and limitations of interviews conducted via WhatsApp are discussed in a specific section, focusing on pregnancy and motherhood. Surveys are scrutinized both for what they measure (time) and for differences in administering the same questionnaire on paper and online.
