Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are well known means for the measurement of strain and temperature in broad temperature and strain ranges. The most important features of this sensor type are its small size, light weight, full electrical insulation, negligible interaction with electric and magnetic fields, and the flexible fiber leads of good thermal insulation between sensor and its interrogation unit. In particular, the low thermal conductivity of the optical fiber is an advantage when working with low temperatures.
