ABSTRACT
Situated in the central region of Bangladesh, the Bangshi River flows through the major industrial hub of Dhaka, resulting in pollution attributed to the discharge of diverse waste, including industrial effluents. This study was conducted to assess the physicochemical and microbial composition of the water in the Bangshi River. It was found that temperature value (28.6-32.4ᵒC), EC value (287-368 µS/cm), pH value (7.58-7.88), BOD5 value (10.25-19.05 mg/L), COD value (302-450 mg/L), DO value (3.05-3.36), TDS value (163-181 mg/L), and SS value (354-381 mg/L) The levels of physicochemical parameters, including temperature, pH, and TDS, were within acceptable ranges. The pH value indicated water quality ranging from normal to slightly acidic, influenced by climatic conditions and seasonal variations in temperature. Total coliform (TC) and fecal coliform (FC) ranged from 1.25 × 107 CFU/100ml to 2.64 × 107 CFU/100ml and 6.11 × 107 CFU/100ml to 7.56 × 107 CFU/100ml, respectively. The levels of total coliform (TC) and fecal coliform (FC) exhibited a concerning escalation across the six locations, surpassing the established DoE standard values. These findings underscore the urgent need for an enhanced management system and heightened attention from authorities. The insights gained from this study contribute significantly to the expanding body of knowledge for future research on the Bangshi River.
