ABSTRACT
Hearing-impaired children with sensorineural hearing loss are typically prescribed with hearing aid (HA). To measure the benefits of HA, various subjective and objective assessments can be conducted. Among the measures, cortical auditory-evoked potential (CAEP) is useful to provide objective information regarding the cortical function following the use of HA. As such, the aim of this review was to provide information on the benefits of using HA in light of CAEP studies. Keyword searches using Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar databases were carried out. In the end, quantitative studies on CAEP in aided hearing-impaired children (n = 22) were found to be eligible for review. Analysis of the findings of studies revealed three components that would influence the CAEP outcomes in hearing-impaired children including HA setting, experience factor and language performance. Collectively, this review found that there were limited aided CAEP studies in children, in which further research is warranted. Moreover, standardized CAEP normative data are currently lacking, and this aspect should be addressed accordingly in order to develop a suitable protocol to record aided CAEP among children.
